Smith Road is a pretty marginal spot for ripening Syrah and a lot of years, it just doesn't produce a stand alone wine. 2022 is the first vintage since 2019 that we have bottled one. If you like cool climate lean Syrah, this should be up your alley. Though uniquely Santa Cruz Mountains, there is a strong presence of "Cote Rotie" like roasted slope character, bacon, and maple going on. 50% whole cluster, fermented in a puncheon with the head off, 50% destemmed and fermented in a T-bin. Aged 20 months in barrique. This wine will age well if stored properly. Only two barrels produced. Some vintages lend themselves to a fresher style either because the acid isn't there to handle the oxidation or the fruit just doesn't go that direction. This is a vintage that has the structure and acid to hold up in a way that a little maderization adds complexity without making the wine feel or taste "old." I suspected that last year's would be crown pleasing since it was brighter, but this is one that will dig deeper with food pairings and leave us with more to think about. Per usual, a blend of Woodruff in Corralitos with vines going back to the 1970s and Amaya Ridge in the hills above Squel which we planted in 2011. Each of the two lots was whole-cluster pressed and combined in a concrete egg for fermentation, left there for a year on the lees, and then racked to 228L Burgundy barrels for another 9 months with very minimal topping. The wine has aromas of yeast and nuts and a damp cellar and flavors of lemon and butterscotch. This Chardonnay vintage has the marks of one that will age well. pH 3.19, TA 7.7 g/L

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0214/4760/products/GhostwriterChard_6bfe29ee-9cc6-43dc-95c4-426eda679258.jpg?v=1681853351
2021-ghostwriter-pinot-noir-amaya-ridge-santa-cruz-mountains
2022 Ghostwriter Pinot Noir, Amaya Ridge, Santa Cruz Mountains

A darker more structured, more concentrated wine than the cuvée showing its alpine influence, vine age, and subsistence on rain water only. This is a wine that has all the hallmarks that we love in Pinot Noir; earthy, rich soil, forest floor aromas and ephereal flavors that suggest place and time while remaining unbound and timeless. Despite everything, this is one of the best if not the best wine we have produced from this vineyard. We have put a long of time into understanding the site and how to make wine from it and it paid off in a challenging year. As always, it is from the two lower older blocks of the vineyard planted 50/50 to heritage clones, Saintsburg and Calera. 40% whole cluster and aged in two neutral and one second fill French oak barrel. This was always the intention, but didn't work logistically last year. All of the varieties were harvested on the same day, September 9, completely destemmed, and then co-fermented in one tank. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 8% Petite Verdot. Lean, herbal, with cedar, graphite, and cherry fruit, this is a wine that idealizes the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is the kind of wine that I can envision Chaffee Hall getting excited about as a Bordeaux collector who planted grapes and started making wine in the early 1900s in the Santa Cruz Moutains. A wine that sails in the the imaginary gulf between "old" and "new" world wine expectations, fully ripe, but not overipe fruit integrated with tannins to provide structure in a way that should age wonderfully. We expect it to represent the vintage, the appellation, and our approach to them both. What that meant in 2022 was harvesting all of our Pinot from the multiple sites in three days time to avoid excessive sugar and any kind of cooked flavors. Amaya Ridge and Coast Grade came off just before the predicted heat wave and Smith Road and Veranda came off during. This is a year when the cuvée really shows itself being more cohesive and complimentary in flavor than most of the lots were individually. These lots individually were awkward, a bit disjointed, but together, they really have coherency and the feeling that a plan was in place. Because the development time was shortened, the stems were greener than usual and we opted to include less, about 30% compared with the normal 40% and one lot of Veranda was completely destemmed. As always, the fruit leans cranberry and is layered on with spice, a bit of earth, and a subtle creaminess with firm acid, and a very approachable texture and mouthfeel. Despite the tough vintage, I think we have one of the best vintages of cuvée to date. Fermented in open-tops with minimal cap management. This has always been and still is the best value in the Ghostwriter line-up. Approachable, but still ageable. pH 3.64, TA 6.9 g/L
